OÂÂEmail reflector ÂÂWe have been disseminating messages by use of several distribution lists. This involves extra steps of forwarding messages and/or keeping several distribution lists up to date. We have not been using real À ÀreflectorÀÀ technology. We decided to set up two email reflectors: one for internal X3L8 messages and one for broad distribution. We will come up with names for these. NIST will set up the reflectors. OÂÂDistribution of documents for WG 4 meeting: ÂÂThe documents for the WG4 meeting will be put up on the FTP server for immediate access. Paper copies will be sent to Bill Kenworthey for official distribution. Due dates: ÁÁÂ` ` ` ÂÁ€ÁPart 1, A copy of Working Draft 5 was provided to Bill. Dan will send a document describing changes that he is making. Due to Bill April 14, 1995. ÁÁPart 2, April 15, 1995 ÁÁPart 6, April 7, 1995 OÂÂBallot comments on ISO/IEC 6523 CD Ballot. ÁÁWe will make comments on this via email. OÂÂResponse to France on proposed New Work Item ÂÂDraft of comment for Phong Ngo to send to France: We reviewed the material that you sent to us regarding the potential NWI. We now have a somewhat better idea of what is being proposed, but still have many questions. We find the issue to be important. The issue and the concerns are currently being considered in several contexts. It should be possible to register the coding schemes as data elements under ISO/IEC 11179. More detailed consideration is being given to the issues in mutual work between X3L8, the EIA CDIF committee, SC7/WG11. SC30 is also involved in work related to this issue. It would be useful to discuss the ongoing efforts before establishing a NWI committing us to development of a separate standard. We are concerned about committing to development of a new standard for identifying coding schemes, when such is expected to be natural outcome of the work underway. We intend to suggest that this issue be placed on the agenda for the next WG4 meeting in Rio. OÂÂDiscussion of ISO/IEC 11179, Part 1. ÂÂDan Gillman, taking over as editor of this document, has made progress in making revisions per the comments made at the last X3L8 meeting. He passed out a copy of Part 1 with revisions. He is working on more revisions. We discussed the issue of À ÀrepresentationÀÀ. This seems to have several embedded concepts within it. E.g., it includes value domain and categorization (class of representation). We also discussed different aspects of value domain: The maintenance agency (if any) for approving new valid values, the method by which new valid values are generated, and the form of representation of the valid values. The above concepts need to be sorted out in Part 1. We reaffirmed our previous decision that Part 1 would only address issues covered in other parts of ISO/IEC 11179. Dan will not be expected to produce a new Working Draft for circulation before the WG4 meeting. Paul Hawes (the previous editor) will present his last draft (WD 5) at the WG4 meeting and record comments for Dan. OÂÂISO/IEC 11179, Part 2.Œ™ÂÂWe discussed the contribution of Wil van den Bragt and Denis Hill. Bill Kenworthey will respond to them. The taxonomy that they have developed is particular to a limited universe of discourse, and therefore appropriate for a particular Registry. We are developing a more general one. Bill will distribute a draft ISO/IEC 11179 Part 2 Taxonomy with a definition for each taxon. By the WG4 meeting, Bill will have taken it down farther than in the pre©meeting distribution. To the extent possible he will show where the taxa offered by van den Bragt and Hill would be accommodated in the 11179 Part 2 taxonomy. Briefly, The following is an overview of the ISO 11179 Part 2 Object Taxonomy. Frank Olken suggested that the Stanford Portable Ontology System may be useful. He will check to see if he can find available software that can support the population of a taxonomy/ontology. OÂÂISO 11179, Part 6 ÂÂPhong Ngo presented a new version of Part 6. We reviewed it and made comments. He will make revisions and forward the document for distribution before the WG 4 meeting. We still need to resolve the issue of whether we want a registry of registries or not. This could impact the method for generating the unique identifier for registration authorities. If no registry of registry is to be maintained, then a distributed method of generating Registration Authority IDÀÀs could be used. E.g., use the time of day (of registry creation) to hundredth of a second. (The likelihood that this would be a unique number is adequate for our purposes.) If a registry of registry is to be maintained, it is desirable to have a single authority issuing Registration Authority IDÀÀs. How would such an authority be created and funded? Such an authority could use ISO/IEC 6523 as a means for issuing Registration Authority IDÀÀs. OÂÂDiscussion of metamodel. ÂÂThe SD3 for development of the Metamodel was approved by OMC. ŒÂÂWe need to prepare for public comment on the metamodel. For this, we need to have front matter prepared. The front matter would describe the purpose, requirements, and intent for the metamodel. It should suggest possible applications. Judy Newton is preparing the front matter. She will distribute a draft before the next meeting. We will discuss it at the next meeting. ÂÂBill Stuart and Joe Leahy demonstrated a proof of concept demonstration of the metamodel. The demonstration engaged the group in entering a data element into the À Àprototype registryÀÀ. During the demonstration, many issues were raised for the metamodel. In particular, Bill discussed how the contribution of Professor Sorgel on capturing À ÀrelationshipsÀÀ might be helpful to us. ÂÂPaul Hawes has a partial implementation of the metamodel. It would be very helpful to use two implementations of the metamodel (e.g., PaulÀÀs and BillÀÀs) to test integration of data elements from two registries. We will try to arrange this. ÂÂPaul Hawes led a discussion of the metamodel. He described changes he made in the metamodel per the discussion at the last meeting. Several issues were raised and some issues were resolved. These are listed in the À ÀIssues ListÀÀ, which is available separately on the FTP server, directory= x3l8/x3l8docs, filename=issue©mm.wp6 (also .wp5 and .txt).  ÂÂTo expedite resolution of the issues, we want to use electronic mail to make suggested resolution and to make comments on the resolutions. We will do this utilizing the reflector. 4. Next meetings: SIG Meetings©©the following SIG meetings will be held at NIST: Monday, May 8, 1995 Admin. Bldg., Room B111, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Admin.
