The following reports the issues raised and decisions made: 1. World Wide Web Page for X3L8 Frank Olken made the revisions suggested at the last meeting. Some more suggestions were made. Frank will put it up for general access and post itÀÀs location to Yahoo, Lycos and other directories. The URL is: http://www.lbl.gov/~olken/x3l8.html 2. X3L8 reflector Alan Goldfine has set up the X3L8©NEWS reflector and use of it has begun. The Internet address is: x3l8©news@speckle.ncsl.nist.gov The internal reflector will be set up next. 3. Report of SC14/WG4 meeting Bill Kenworthey gave a report of the SC14/WG4 meeting. The reports of the meeting are available on the X3L8 reflector, see below (file names in directory /x3l8/sc14docs are wg4rpt.wp5 and wg4©rcmd.wp5). The SC14/WG4 meeting participants recommended that we set up an email reflector for WG4. Alan Goldfine is asked to set up the reflector with the name SC14WG4©NEWS. We (in the SIG) discussed who should be on the lists. It was agreed that we would try to À ÀnormalizeÀÀ the lists. That is, names would be on one list or the other. The X3L8©NEWS reflector will contain the names of the X3L8 committee members and anyone else who requests to be on the list. The SC14WG4©NEWS reflector will initially list the SC14 members and people interested in SC14 issues (who are not on the X3L8 reflector lists). The SC14/WG4 reflector could be generalized to SC14 after the SC14 meeting. 4. Review of ISO/IEC SC14 N775 © Open EDI Reference Model It was agreed to recommend to the X3L8 plennary that we send following message to Ronny: Ronny©© We reviewed document ISO/IEC SC14 N775, Open EDI Reference Model. The timing of this ballot fell between official meetings of X3L8. We would like to send you the following informal comments. We feel that the Open EDI model is consistent with the work of SC14. As the work progresses, SC30 should consider ISO/IEC 11179 as input, particularly to the business operation view (Section 4.1). We would like to be on the direct distribution list (preferably electronic) for documents developed as part of the SC30 work. We would like to have the documents sent to Paul Hawes at: ÁÁMr. M. Paul Hawes ÂÂBellcore ÂÂ444 Hoes Lane, Room 4D848 ÂÂPiscataway, New Jersey 08854 ÁÁTEL: (908) 699©3209 ÂÂFAX: (908) 336©2980 ÂÂINTERNET: mph@rruxls.bellcore.com 5. Review of ISO/IEC SC14 N 778, Periodic Review of ISO 5218:1977, confirmation, revision or withdrawal of ISO 5218, Information interchange ©© Representation of human sexes. It was agreed to recommend to the X3L8 plenary that we vote on the questions as follows: ÂÂQuestion 1, Is this the best possible solution .... ÁÁÁ` ` ÁAnswer: No ÂÂÂ` ` ` ÂÁ€ÁQuestion 2, Is actual practice consistent with the ISO standard? ÁÁÁ` ` ÁAnswer: No ÂÂÂ` ` ` ÂÁ€ÁQuestion 3, Are you in favor of Revision? ÁÁÁ` ` ÁAnswer: Yes (see comment below) ÂÂÂ` ` ` ÂÁ€ÁQuestion 4, Are you prepared to participate in development?ŒÂÂÂ` ` ` ÂAnswer: Yes ÂÂComment: 6. Review of ISO/IEC SC14 N 776, CD Ballot, Computational aids in terminology © Data element categories, and N 779, CD Ballot, Terminology work © Principles and methods We will go over these two documents in the July meeting, since they require some reading. 7. The above ISO documents came between regularly scheduled X3L8 meetings. We have missed the deadline for comment on these documents since they were held for distribution for the X3L8 meeting. We would like to distribute the documents sooner and act upon these documents at the SIG meetings. Phong Ngo has volunteered to sort, copy and distribute the ISO documents. This would relieve Nancy Dukes from the extra burden, so that she can limit her distribution to only 3 main X3L8 meetings per year. We will negotiate this for approval during the X3L8 plenary. 8. There is a problem making timely comments on the ISO ballots. Therefore we would like to set up a mechanism by which the SIG, which meets more frequently, can respond. It is proposed that the SIG have short, formal, interim X3L8 meetings so that it can take action. Regular X3L8 members would be sent email on the actions and asked to respond. We would work out attendance/participation so that all people who regularly attend the regular X3L8 meetings would remain in voting status. 9. ISO/IEC 11179 Part 1. Paul Hawes provided Dan Gillman with the edits agreed upon at the SC14/WG4 meeting. We the current state and anticipated progress of the document. Dan will edit the document and prepare it for distribution by August, 1995. 10. ISO/IEC Part 2. The recommendations from SC14/WG4 were discussed along with how to progress the document. We discussed how logical metadata classes can be associated with classification schemes. E.g., Potential Logical Metadata Class: Object Class Property Data Element Concept/Data ConceptŒRepresentation Potential Classification Structures: Ontology Taxonomy Partonomy (meronomy) Thesaurus Keywords (not quite class structure) Things to do: a. Write good definition for each of the above. ÂÂÁ€°° Áb. Determine which classification structures apply to which logical metadata class ÂÂÁ€°° Ác. What attributes (e.g., id, name, definition) are needed to relate the classification structure to the LMC d. How do we deal with Qualification? Suggestions for attributes needed: Facet Classification scheme Classification Scheme Version Related data reference Type of relationship 11. Report on ISO/IEC 11179, Part 5 Judith Newton provided the final draft of Part 6, which is now being sent to ISO to be published as an International Standard. 12. Report on ISO/IEC 11179, Part 6 Phong Ngo reported on the response to his broad query for information about coding schemes that could support our need for unique registration authority identifiers. He received several responses. He attended a meeting of ANSI X12 to explore what the EDI community is doing with ISO 6523. It appears that Dunn and Bradstreet and other major code issuing organizations have signed a memorandum of understanding to get use the ISO 6523 scheme. We therefore feel that we can proceed with the draft of Part 6 as currently written. We do not appear to need a different scheme for obtaining unique identifiers for registration authorities. Phong will complete edits on Part 6 and send it to the SC14 Secretariat for CD ballot. Bert Parker presented a new version of a paper that could be modified to be a support document for Part 6. He included edits received from Larry Fitzwater and Paul Hawes. It discusses how a registration authority could be set up. The discussion covers procedures as well as various roles and responsibilities. More suggestions for improvements were made. Bert will next modify the document to make it more generic so that it can accompany ISO/IEC 11179 without identifying a particular organization. 13. Metamodel for Data Representation We want to send this material out for public review. We invited Ms. Lynn Barra from ITI to describe the revised X3 procedures we need to follow for public review. These procedures are much expedited from those of the past. They are summarized as follows: a.ÂÂX3L8 vote (at meeting) to send material out for public review. b.ÂÂWe prepare the material to be sent out. ÂÂÁ€°° Á c.ÂÂWe prepare some À ÀpaperworkÀÀ to accompany the material. She gave us a copy of the forms to fill out. d. ÂÂWe give the material to Ms. Barra. We can suggest material for the press release. e.ÂÂShe develops a press release announcing the two month public review period. Also announces it via the WWW. f.ÂÂPeople can obtain copies at some cost from Global Engineering, who handles the distribution. g.ÂÂSimultaneously, ANSI editor makes suggestions for proper edits. g.ÂÂWe receive the comments and make resolution. h.ÂÂDepending on nature of fixes, multiple public review rounds can occur (technical changes necessitate new review). I.ÂÂX3L8 vote (letter ballot) to accept resolution of comments. j.ÁÁSubmit to X3 for six©week letter ballot. Lynn provided us with copies of the new X3/SD©2. Paul led discussion of the metamodel describing changes made since the last version. We raised and resolved several issues as recorded in the issues list. Issues and resolutions are recorded in the metamodel issues document À Àissues©mm.txtÀÀ on the FTP server (see below). Also agreed re: metamodel presentation: Representation is more than just value domain. Therefore the bottom of the metamodel should be labeled À ÀRepresentationÀÀ. 11.
