Phong Ngo, Chairperson of X3L8, led the initial meetings and passed the chair to Dan Gillman for the last session. The following reports the issues raised and decisions made: 1.Committee members were happy to hear that Alan Goldfine is recovering well from his heart attack. He has been back to work part time. He missed this meeting due to scheduled surgery, but should be back to work in a few days. 2.Dan Gillman passed out Working Draft 7 of 11179, Part 1, Framework. Comments were made and he will produce a revised version. He will send it to Paul Hawes for distribution for the WG 4 Meeting, which will be held May 2023, 1996. 3.Bruce Bargmeyer discussed ISO/IEC 11179 Part 2. People should give any comments to Bruce by the end of next week. Bruce will prepare a new version by the end of the following week and send a paper copy to Paul Hawes for distribution before the WG4 meeting. 4.Phong Ngo said that he will have Part 6 prepared for DIS ballot by the end of the month. He will send it to the SC14 Secretariat for balloting. 5.John McCarthy raised the issue of document dissemination for X3L8 documents, suggesting the use of HTML. It was agreed that we would work toward a longterm solution of making documents available in HTML. Any member wishing to distribute a document (e.g., on the X3L8 web page or FTP server) will take the necessary actions to be able to produce an HTML version of the document. We would also like to encourage other SDOs to do this. JeanPaul Emard suggested that we ask Lisa Rajchel for a format Guide for document preparation and distribution. 6.Paul Hawes reported on the recent X.12 meetings. He discussed ways in which the X3L8 work is relevant to EDI. Paul described efforts underway to assist the EDI efforts in utilizing the X3L8 and SC14 standards. 7.We discussed the BSR effort. Bruce Bargmeyer passed out the latest version of BSR/MC/95N45. Denis Hill and Francois Vuilleumier will be here later this month. A meeting is being arranged for February 29th for several people to meet with them. X3L8 members were invited to attend. The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at NIST North (See below for directions on how to get to NIST North). 8.Phong Ngo lead a review of the second CD of ISO 6523. In the Paris WG4 meeting, the US delegation agreed to the addition of the OPIS which is the OPI source indicator. We will honor that agreement, but wish to comment that upon further reflection, we are concerned that the addition of this digit makes this an intelligent identifier or adds nonidentification information to the identifier. We would prefer to see this information carried as information on the ICD List and that the list should be readily available over the Internet. The OPIS information could then readily be determined by users, without carrying it in the ISO 6523 identifier. 9.We discussed the SC14 document N819, the Secretariats Report. It was generally agreed that we would like to change the scope and name of SC14 to move from Data Elements to a scope and name that reflects the broader concepts of metadata that we are currently working on. We should discuss this at the next WG4 meeting. The SIG recommends that X3L8 send JTC1 TAG via Regina Girouard a message of support of the Secretariats report (and Secretarys report) and the work of SC14. 10.Paul Hawes initiated a discussion of the relevance of the X3L8 metamodel to STEP. We discussed STEP and the potential application of the metamodel. Doug Mann will contact members of the STEP committee, ISO TC184/SC4, and of X3T2 to suggest that they review the X3L8 metamodel during the public review period. 11.Paul Hawes reports that the X3L8 Metamodel for the Management of Sharable Data is officially out for public review. Comments are due March 19, 1996. Paul has sent messages to several people to personally let them know that the metamodel is out for review. Other members are also making contacts. 12.Judith Newton introduced a draft of the new work item about identifiers for data element values. In response to the paper, some changes were made in the X3L8 Metamodel. Many comments were made and Judith will produce another version aligning the concepts and terminology with the revised X3L8 Metamodel. 13.Douglas Mann described a version of the X3L8 metamodel which he has translated into NIAM. This may help to introduce the model to people most familiar with NIAM models. It also helps to identify issues that need to be resolved. He passed out a diagram and previously handed out a text printout. John McCarthy will help to put this material up on the X3L8 home page, so that it is accessible from the Web. 14.Paul Hawes led a discussion of the Metamodel for Sharable Data. We resolved some issues and raised some additional ones. The revisions and additions are recorded in the metamodel issues document. Available on the X3L8 FT server (hopefully soon in html). 15.Future meeting schedule ` ` ` Note change: March 1315, 1996 SIG meeting at NIST North, Room 201 ` ` ` Note change: April 2224, 1996 SIG meeting at NIST North, Room 201 May 1617, 1996 SIG meeting at NIST North, Room 201 ` ` ` Note additional day: May 2023, 1996 SC14/WG4 meeting in D.C.
