The meeting was led by Bruce Bargmeyer.
The following is a report of topics discussed and agreements made.
1. Status reports
Linda Spencer gave a presentation about the status of EPA efforts on terminology. EPA is working on development of concepts for the environment. The concepts will be associated with terms in use by various levels of government in various geographic areas. The terms will be organized into a thesaurus, topic trees, data elements and an ontology. Input is being obtained from the General European Environmental Thesaurus, from existing thesauri and from facilitated workgroup sessions. A focus of this effort is on concepts used for environmental clean-up activities.
2. Relevant Standards
Tom Kurihara has found a number of relevant standards and passed out copies of part or all of each standard. In ISO 704, Tom Kurihara found a reference to ISO 860 International Unification of Concepts and Terms. This standard may be useful in specifying terms and concepts for our work. See the Workplan for more information on identification of standards and analysis of their content.
3. Meeting with search engine vendor
EPA has arranged a meeting to explore the terminology capabilities of the Verity search engine. L8 participants are invited. Bruce Bargmeyer will send a message about the time and place of the meeting and how to get there.
4. Framework
Bruce Bargmeyer presented a revised version of a presentation that will be worked into a "framework" document. The revised version is on the project website. See the project website, above. The group reviewed the presentation and made many comments.
The group reviewed the draft work plan. Completed tasks were so marked. New tasks and subtasks were specified. Assignments were reviewed and modified. See the Workplan on the project website, above.
The group discussed the Terminology panel scheduled as part of the upcoming Open Forum on Metadata Registries, February 16-19, 1999. We discussed potential speakers. As suggested by Tom Kurihara Bruce Bargmeyer has contacted Sue Ellen Wright, but has not heard back. We expect this to be a half-day panel.
